The 2008 Summit on Deaf Education

Change in Educating Children and Youth who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing:
Quality Control in Educational Systems

April 30, May 1 & 2, 2008

Great Falls, Montanta

Parents and professionals from all over the United States gathered for the fourth national Summit on Deaf Education.  Along with a team from the Kelston Deaf Education Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, 175 US participants met to explore solutions to the challenges faced in the field today.  A special emphasis on serving students in rural communities was part of the theme that focused on “Making a Commitment to Systems Change in Deaf Education.”

The mission of The Summit is to promote and advance knowledge and leadership through deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing professional and parent stakeholder partnerships that result in collaborative state education systems and improved outcomes for children and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Teams comprised of a parent leader, a representative from the state school for the deaf, and from the state department of education along with national experts in research, higher education, and early intervention had the opportunity to work together on statewide improvement planning, as well as to participate in plenary sessions where collaborative models and new technologies were showcased.

Supporters of The Summit include Hands & Voices National, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf, and the Regional Resource Program and Federal Resource Center.

The Summit is grateful to Caption Colorado for providing captioning services for this meeting.
